Entrepreneur……..I’m not sure what it is about that word, but I find it hard to put myself into this category.
Everybody has at least one word that they don’t like, it gives you the shudders, nobody can explain why, it just does. I have a friend who hates the word ‘sludge’ and my sister can’t stand the word ‘replenish’. For me personally its ‘Entrepreneur’ and its not that I hate the word, it just feels as if it’s become a popular term, almost like a badge of honour used by the fresh faced who are yet to have their first business failure.
It’s seems like people use it in an attempt to sound powerful and successful. Although it may well just happen to be the people I meet that act this way. Don’t get me wrong I respect anybody trying to make a go of it on their own and wish them the best success, but not everybody that runs a business is an entrepreneur.
I run my own businesses. I have run companies from start to finish, by myself and with employees, and have always referred to myself as a businessman not an entrepreneur. I think for me this stems from doing things as an individual and doing things in teams. I see entrepreneurs as individuals who are self-orientated, i.e. they run as a single person business working in silos. Whereas I see a business person as working as part of a larger team who collaborate to achieve a joint vision. For me this is definitely the right way. Ever heard the saying two minds are better than one? I believe if I can get 100 minds all pushing in the same direction and trying to achieve the same goal then that’s a winning formula.
So for the time being I refer to myself as a businessman and not an entrepreneur.
